This past week we learned all about the in’s and out’s of feature photographs. For my feature assignment I focused on what is on everybody’s minds at SLU, and right now that is the ever so loved midterms. As I walked through the library’s many floors and victims, the constant looks of desperation, relief, determination, focus, and sometimes some happiness were seen on all of the students’ faces. I came across sophomore Mary Shannon in Pius Library the other night. What I really liked about her/drew me into taking a few pictures of her were her things she had around her such as coffee, water, highlighters, pens, pencils, notebooks, laptop, etc. You can clearly see what she is doing and it is relatable to all of SLU’s students if not during midterms week but hopefully year round. What I like most about this picture though is her focus and concentration on what she is doing as well has her body language/actions she is doing such as the pen to her mouth. I think it gives the picture a more real life aspect to it as opposed to someone just sitting there with a blank expression on their face staring at their Facebook page.

ST. LOUIS-October 17, 2011-Mary Shannon is hard at work researching and studying for her midterm on Wednesday. She expects to be in Pius Library late tonight and into the morning hours. (SLU Photo/Mary Kate Casey)
Nicely said Mary Kate. You’re right, the “punctum” of the image is the pen in the mouth. Nicely seen.
