This stltoday. com file photo from January 2011, shows Illinois Governor Pat Quinn at a meeting. I picked this for my general news blog because today, Gov. Quinn abolished the death penalty in Illinois and also excused those criminals who are currently on death row or could face the penalty in upcoming months. It’s general news because it was a planned events, however, I guess stltoday.com couldn’t get into the meeting where Quinn reveled his verdict on the matter.
Quinn believes that our justice system makes mistakes, and I suppose he was tired of hearing stories that people were being or about to be executed for crimes they they didn’t commit. He apparently issued a statement to the victims of murder trials along the lines of him not being able to cure their feelings of loss for their loved ones but to understand that the justice system is flawed.
As of now, I don’t know what general news I plan to cover for the next assignment. I know that it’s all about planning, so I’m hoping that my planning skills will pay off and get me a few good photos over break.
Good find Sierra. Many times the paper doesn’t have the people resources to attend every governmental meeting. Editors prioritize photo assignments depending on the daily budget of news stories and the staff on hand to handle the workload.
